Who I am

My name is Cody West, and I am a follower of Jesus Christ. I was saved 2 years ago, when I realized how foolish I had been throughout my life, and that I needed to repent and follow Him. Since then, my family has grown: my wife and I have 4 kids now, and our house is busy. I like to build things, complete projects, read books with my kids, spend time with my wife, hang out with the men in my church, and learn new skills (any skills!).

My baptism and testimony

In this video I'm baptized and share how I came to faith in Jesus — the story behind who I am and why I build the way I do.

Why Missived

I have been in IT / Cyber for about 10 years. I was an IT project manager, a cybersecurity analyst, then a cyber engineer. When we joined our church, I found a disturbing lack of businesses with adequate cybersecurity. So I founded a company, Longsword Security, to fill the gap. Communicating with customers became a pain point. I naturally went to Discord, having been an avid gamer for most of my life. (ADC main on League of Legends, triple-boxed mages on WoW Classic, anybody remember Combat Arms?) However, Discord's lack of trust from the community stood out, and I can't recommend it or use it anymore.

I began hunting for a solution, and found problems — cost too much to be reasonable, features don't align, security isn't there. Then, I thought… well, I'll build it. I began planning, spent a ton of time organizing and designing, then building. I tested, fixed, built, and tested. All of a sudden, I had something that worked. I was asked questions, given more ideas, and I started the loop again.

My church had a need, so I designed some more, and the Ministry tier came to be. My family still games, they asked me questions, so the Creator tier got lined up. Clients at Longsword asked me questions, gave me more ideas, so I built Business to align with their needs. I built it to be secure, robust, but adaptable — and, believe it or not, I think I did it.

My goals

My dream for Missived isn't to "take the bag from Discord". I am not here for money. I want users to have an experience that they can depend on. Bugs reported get fixed. You hear from us, and we listen to you. I want to pay people well to take care of their families, and to help me help you — we don't have shareholders to please, we don't have ads to buy, and I want users to know that we have your back.

Nobody gets your information from me if I can help it. (The one exception: if someone uses Missived to commit a crime, we'll work with law enforcement under valid legal process.) Export it, delete it, do whatever you want. Self-host it — we support that specifically so you can review the code, double-check our work, and do it yourself for cheaper. There should never be a question about "Missived selling your data" or "posting your chats on Google / Reddit / GitHub". I use this too, every day, and I am building it like I am in it.

It is your data; we are just its caretaker.

How to find me

You can email me whenever at [email protected]. Technically, you can call Longsword Security and get me: longswordsecurity.com. If you don't have constructive information, and are just reaching out to be rude and ineffective, you will be ignored or hung up on. Let's keep it Christ-like; I am always happy to talk about faith, or something I might be doing wrong. I want to improve, and I know I make mistakes. I look forward to hearing from you!

How we work

Our privacy promise names the companies that touch your data. The security page explains how we protect it, including the limits.

The self-hosted edition is open source under AGPL-3.0-only and ready for early testers. Missived is open to everyone; Feature guide and the roadmap show where things stand.
